Communications should focus on:

  • Sharing information from trusted sources
  • Explaining key issues directly affecting the nonprofit sector
  • Holding officials accountable
  • Helping people organize and facilitate participation in the democratic process

Nonprofit organizations that are federally registered as charities must adhere to the Income Tax Act (ITA) regulations, as interpreted and applied by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Staff and volunteers

As Canadian citizens, your staff and volunteers have a right to participate in the democratic process. They are not bound to nonpartisan dialogue and can participate in campaigns for specific candidates and use their voice on personal social media channels as long as they aren’t acting in their official capacity of their organization.

Your organization's code of conduct and conflict of interest policies still apply, which all staff and volunteers are required to abide by.
