Impact of the CIOG Budget Cuts

The Community Investment Operating Grant (CIOG) is an essential funding stream available to support core operating costs of non-profit organizations in Edmonton.

Prior to 2023, the CIOG program saw steady increases in the amount of funding available and the number of organizations supported. However, at the end of 2022, despite the efforts of community, City Council budget decisions led to a reduction in the program by 75%. The program went from $3.65 million in 2022 to $0.96 million in 2023.

This significant decision led to 106 social service and sports organizations that had received the funding regularly for the 3 years prior losing all funding from the CIOG. An additional 36 organizations lost at least 50% of their funding.

The CIOG provides flexible funding to essential non-profits in our community. These organizations support all Edmontonians and provide a wide range of services from inclusive sports and recreation, literacy programs for newcomers and marginalized adults, to community development in ethnocultural communities. These programs and services are essential in advancing community safety and wellbeing.

In this time of recovery and transformation we need funders to work with the community and continue to support these diverse, essential programs through flexible, operational grants.

We need your help! Fill out the form on this page to send a letter to Edmonton City Council and Mayor. You can use the message provided or you can customize it as you see fit.
